How to tell if you are using a true 16:9 resolution?

There is a simple way, simply divide the width number of resolution by 8 and the height number by 8.  If the results for each are a whole number, then the resolution is a true 16 x 9 resolution.

For example, a resolution of 512 x 288.  Divide 512 / 8 = 64, then divide 288 / 8 = 36.  As you can see the results are both whole numbers, which means 512 x 288 is a true 16 x 9 resolution.

Where as a resolution of 960 x 540, if you divide the 960 / 8 = 120, then divide 540 / 8 = 67.5 the results as you can see are not both whole numbers, since 67.5 is not equally divisible by 8.

Why is it important to use a true 16 x 9 resolution?  Resolutions that are not divisible by 8 can cause errors like macro blocking and a green bar on the sides of a video.  Also, there are a few encoders that can have problems if the resolution is not 16 x 9.
