Sony DFS-300

Dual Bus Freeze - Sony DFS-300
http://www.studio1productions.com

Typically, the Sony DFS-300 switcher will freeze a video signal on the Background bus when the Shift button is pressed along with either the Field or Frame button in the Freeze section of the control panel. If you use this process, combined with Effect number 1060 (field freeze) or 1061 (frame freeze), you can place a different still image on each of the two buses and have the capability to use the dissolve transition between the two.

The Sony DFS300 digital video mixer comes from the factory with the Shift + Freeze mode is assigned to the Background bus. However, the user set-up menu will permit the Shift + Freeze mode to be assigned to the Foreground bus for other applications. Make sure the Shift + Freeze is still assigned to the Background bus.

Use the Shift + Freeze command to freeze a picture on the Background bus. Then execute Effect 1060 or 1061 to place another frozen image on the Foreground bus. Use a manual take or auto-take transition to toggle the back and forth between the two still pictures.

To replace the Background picture with a new frozen one, requires the Field or Frame button to be released and re-engaged along with the Shift button.

To replace the Foreground picture simply apply a new picture to the Foreground bus and re-executing Effects 1060 or 1061.

NOTES: Use Field-Freeze to capture fast moving video, the results will be a slightly lower resolution still picture. Use Frame-Freeze to capture slow-moving video, the results will be a frozen picture at its highest level.

Changing the Sony DFS-300 Freeze Assignment

As stated above, the Sony’s DFS-300 Switcher is factory set with the Shift + Freeze mode assigned to the Background bus. However, there maybe times that you need to freeze a Foreground picture. (i.e. for keying purposes or to pre-loading an upcoming still) You can re-configure the freeze mode to the Foreground bus by pressing the Shift and Set button at the same time.

A display will come up the keypad window that will show a number of user-changeable parameters. Press the Up/Down keys in the keypad section until the work “FrEZ” appears. You will see all of the input buttons on the Background buss lit.

Press any of the input buttons on the Foreground bus and all five of them will light. This assigns the Freeze capability to the Foreground buss. To reset the Sony DFS-300 to its normal operating method, simply press the Shift and Set buttons simultaneously.
